Tracking Patients Is Easy When Using Dental Management Software

Dentistry is a professional service that many people try to avoid. Even though it is known that oral health is an important part of overall health, many people cringe at the thought of going in. From the opposite side of the chair, having a dental management software program is important for keeping track of the needs of patients.

Healthy teeth and gums are an important aspect of overall health. Yet, it has been proven that those people with the worst hygiene are often the ones not making appointments. Fear of dentists is one of the major issues when dealing with patients. While most people have never been hurt by a dentist, there tends to be a deep seated fear. However, nowadays a little discomfort is all most people will experience.

Because getting patients is a challenge, being able to keep track of new and current ones is very important. Prior to computers, records were kept on every person who was seen by the doctor. Each patient would have a medical record created that contained all of their dental history, every financial transaction, and every service. It even contained when the patient was scheduled to come in again.

The manual method worked, but not well. Patients were frequently forgotten if they had no additional services needed, such as a crown. They were told to call the office for their next cleaning appointment in six months. A note was then placed in the record. It was easy to see how the patient would forget to schedule an appoint six months later, and the office never pulled the file to check.

Once offices realized they were losing patients due to records upkeep, a system was established that used manual index cards or recall cards. These cards were filed alphabetically by last name under the month that the patient was supposed to come back. Therefore, a person with a clean bill of health in June would have their card filed under the December tab so the employees would know to mail out a reminder.

While the card method helped with keeping track of patients, it was still a flawed system due to both employee management of details as well as patients changing their dates and times. Once early software came into play, the ability to have electronic records made it easier to track payments, treatments, and future needs.

Today, it is near impossible to find a dentist without a computer and management software for their business. What was once haphazardly thrown together is now a clear, concise system that provides the follow up necessary for success. The most important aspect of the new systems was the integrated electronic calendar. With applications today, multiple schedules of doctors, hygienists, and techs can be shown at the same time. This important enhancement allows every employee to better manage their time.

Using a form of dental management software helps dentists track all aspects of their business today. By researching different related packages that are available, a dentist can make the best decision for his or her company.
