The guitar is a popular and flexible instrument. For this and other reasons, many people want to learn to play. Many paths to achieving this goal can be found. Some may sit down weekly with an instructor in private or group sessions. Others may wish to learn a bit more privately, perhaps in their own home. For them, video guitar lessons are available.

The history of the instrument stretches back to ancient times. A three thousand year old drawing is a recognizable representation. The Roman cithara, from which the word itself derives, dates back to 40 AD. The evolution has been influenced by various sources from around the world.

It evolved over time through use by the Moors and the Vikings. The Moors played an oud from which the strings are derived. Also of influence was the lute played by the Vikings. The more modern form took hold in the fifteenth and sixteenth centuries with the Spanish vihuela. By the nineteenth century, the typical shape and strings of today's guitar were evident.

Many different sounds can be made by the different types of the instrument. There are steel and wood versions that each offer their own tone. There are acoustic versions that are typically used for classical contexts. The electric form was an exciting invention. Amplification and sound manipulation became a new way to make music.

The electric has had a significant impact on popular culture and the new developments in music over the last seventy years. These new sounds had effect on music but also other cultural manifestations such as movies and fashion.

Learning to play takes time and effort. Instructors can often be found via newspaper or other advertisements. Colleges and universities with music programs often have students who earn extra money by giving lessons.

There are times when sitting down in person with an instructor is not possible. Many facts of life such as time and money can play a part in making such an arrangement impossible. Fortunately, there are other ways to accomplish the task.

Video guitar lessons could be the answer. Your teacher is there when the student has the time and inclination to learn. There are many offerings in this vein on the market today. There are good ones and there are not so good ones. An excited beginner should take the time to find a good one.

Good ones emphasize fundamentals. Acquiring good technique from the start is important. The best programs will introduce the necessary beginner techniques and promote mastery of them.

Also important is to do some research on who is featured on tape. Are they accomplished musicians? Do they include examples of themselves playing on the video? Is their style the one the student wants to learn?

Video guitar lessons can open up a musical world to those without the time or access to other types of instruction. The key to becoming a skilled musician is persistence and commitment. With those attributes and a good program, anyone can fulfill their goal of being a guitar player.
