CAD Software: The Tool Needed For Designing And Drafting

|

By Danielle C. Choquette

If you are serious about designing and drafting, you probably know at least a little about CAD software because you have for sure seen final designs or plans that had been done using this fantastic software. This makes sense, since if designers and draftsmen are working with computers, they are using CAD software which is a type of software and not the brand name of any particular software. These days, a skilled user of this software is able to create stunning 2D and 3D designs that are photo-realistic, precise and simply beautiful.

Some users chose to call CAD software (computer-aided design and drafting) software. Regardless of how you refer to it, you need to understand that it is used for more than drawing shapes. The quality of the finished designs derives from the software's ability to account for all of tolerances, weights and other specifications of the materials making up the design or plans being drawn electronically.

Obviously, this power to test a large number of materials during the drafting and designing process is a great benefit since it gives you access to all sorts of materials that you would never otherwise be able to get your hands upon. Now, a designer toiling away in a single-room design shop in Sacramento, California can experiment with all types of materials without ever leaving the front of his or her computer.

Also, CAD software really makes drafting and designing much easier since it records each step of the process as the work is being done. If used as it was designed to be used, the software will document each step of the designing and drafting process along with all of the specifications of everything being used in the design. The documenting of design and drafting work used to be quite the burdensome requirement that demanded a good deal of a designer's time.

Finally, it must be admitted that this computer software is taking the place of the traditional draftsman table and handheld instruments such as compasses, rulers, edges, protractors and erasers. While some will miss the joy had by designing by hand and eye, there is no denying that performing these same tasks with CAD software is quicker, less expensive and less prone to error. Even those who really enjoy drafting by hand are going to have to get on board and learn how to use CAD software to truly appreciate how much this technology can help them.
