3TB hard drives are now freely available in stores to put in to your computer, external USB hard disk enclosure or network attached storage server.

The difficulty with hard drives this huge is that they have surpassed a "barrier" of 2TB (TB=TeraByte, or 1,000,000 Gigabytes). Many PCs and NAS devices will not correctly recognize these giant hard drives; the problem may be that the computer or NAS will not see the new disk at all or may not address it properly to see the full size of the data area.

In working with network attached storage devices we have found it to be critical in avoiding technical issues that we install only computer hardware, in this example hard drives, that the seller of the product certifies are compatible with the NAS itself.

When we are looking at buying a 3TB hard drive for ReadyNAS Ultra or Ultra Plus network servers we head to the Netgear ReadyNAS hardware compatibility list. This is important because many manufacturers, including Netgear, reserve the right to completely refuse tech support help support if you have purchased a hard disk that they have not included on their compatibility list.

As I was gauging the list of 3TB hard drives that met Netgear's standards for the very well-liked ReadyNAS Ultra and ReadyNAS Ultra Plus home (and SOHO) network attached storage units I was happy to see there were more than only a couple of choices.

In reality the range of prices from the costliest to the least expensive was about $150 per drive!

With this range of 3TB hard drives to select from, one can select a top of the range Seagate Constellation enterprise class drive for companies or enthusiasts wanting the maximum performance, endurance and warranty. Or, if saving money on energy consumption is necessary to you, then go with a Western Digital "Green" hard drive which will perform very well but emphasis is on low power usage.

All the drives listed on the compatibility list are from reputable vendors.
