Hindi movie industry refers to one of the film industries of India, where several movies in Hindi language are made. In India, Hindi movie industry churns out the maximum number of movies. Hindi movie lovers can not forget Mother India because of its rich content. The story of this film is penned by Mehboob Khan and is a remake of his 1940 movie Aurat. The movie depicting the social set up of old India has Nargis Dutt and Sunil Dutt, playing the important roles in the movie. The main character in this film is an innocent village woman with many principles and a strong mind. However she kills her son, in the end, to protect her promise to the landlord. The film was selected as one of the five Best Foreign Language films in the Academy Awards in the year 1958. Mother India was the first official entry from India in Oscars, which showed the societal set up in India after the independence struggle.

Golden Camera Award (Cannes Film Festival), Montreal World Film Festival and the National Film Award for the Best Feature film were some of the awards given for this film, directed by Mira Nair.

Lagaan is the story of an Indian village getting united to fight the taxation imposed by the British rulers. This Ashutosh Gowariker movie was made with 250 million rupees as budget, which had British actors as well.
Water (directed by Deepa Mehta) became India's 4th official entry to the Academy Awards in the category of Best Foreign Language Film. Set in the backdrop of 1938 India, the film explores lives of several widows in Varanasi.
