As Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy begins, Smiley, a decrepit Cold War spymaster in The UK, is being forced into retirement. It quickly becomes very clear to the governing body, though, that there must be a mole inside intelligence agency, and Smiley is nominated to research his earlier comrades.
He contacts a young co-worker still in the agency to assist him to find out what upper-level intelligence agent is playing footsie with the Russians.
Much intrigue arises as Smiley makes tiny moves this way and that, uncovering small things which lead on to greater revelations. This motion picture is as complexly plotted and purposively dense as any in memory, yet it all adds up amazingly well. I watched Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy streaming in good quality.
The Cold War atmosphere and in-built paranoia of the spy world is caught fantasically by trendy Swedish director Tomas Alfredson ("Let the Correct One In"), and the cast is a virtual who's who of male British acting royalty â€" Colin Firth, John Hurt, Ciaran Hinds, Toby Jones, Mark Strong.
In the end though, it is much Oldman's film, thanks to a restrained tour de force performance. Smiley is weathered, worn and beaten down by life, but he's also a quiet, sure force of something that resembles good.
Oldman is George Smiley, the gentle MI6 agent brought back from being made redundant to find a mole in the "playhouse" - the in-house, in-joke name of the top-secret UK agency. Some person is trickling vital data to the Soviets, a person high up in the ranks, and Smiley, discreetly contemplating the world from his thick-rimmed spectacles, is the to track him down. Just watching Gary Oldman and his trenchcoated brethren walk down the damp, ill-lit streets of Cold War London is sufficient to make you shiver.
Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy is, of course, a spy picture, and so it is very much about techniques and lies, trust and betrayal, pacts and paranoia - the stuff of our everyday lives.
