The UI is intuitive such that beginners are not overwhelmed, yet has enough keyboard shortcuts to really keep you cooking entering transactions once you get the hang of it. The budget view/entry screen is clear and well thought out, and the reports are aesthetically pleasing in addition to being useful and informative. I can easily import transactions from my bank and categorize them to come out of the correct budget accounts. Oh, I'm also a fan of Dave Ramsey and am working on my debt snowball (almost done, too!) and the zero-based budgeting and "rainy day" savings philosophies of this software support the Dave plan. I really loved the amount of product support from both YNAB and users on the forums and blogs. Every question I had I was able to answer. Within seconds of firing up YNAB for the first time, my eyes grew wide and a smile came across my face. I knew that YNAB was exactly what I had been looking for. And I've not yet come across a program like YNAB to do just that: Create and maintain a budget. YNAB is totally unique in that sense. The confusing part is that sometimes not placing an item in a category is the correct thing to do, even though most of the time it's not. That's actually caught me a time or two. Others have described the concept of the product, so I won't do that. I will just describe what I find lacking.
Thank you YNAB! We're currently taking Dave Ramsey's Financial Peace University which uses a series of manual forms to track your budget.
But while I was prepared to give up much Quicken functionality, including bill pay, this still seems incomplete to me as a budgeting product. I purchased YNAB last June and can honestly say it has revolutionized our family's finances.
I got YNAB Pro, paid my one-time fee and I was up and running. I love the "buffer" concept, something D.R did not have. He does have an online budget tool you can subscribe to, but I don't want to manage my personal information online. We have been looking for software to make Ramsey's manual forms easier while still maintaining the frequent interaction required to really manage a budget. So far, I've not run into any problems or questions that weren't answered on YNAB's web site. For those who have complained about not being automatically connected to their bank and other accounts, it is fairly quick to go to your bank's web site and click their download button. I think it's a great program, with solid concepts. It almost feels like it's been programmed in (god forbid) Visual Basic or something. With the plan I have created using YNAB Pro, I will be credit card debt free by March 2010, but I'll go on using YNAB Pro long after that! And, even if YNAB Pro decided tomorrow to charge an annual upgrade fee (which they don't), I'd pay it anyway!
Who plans for the rainy days that are sure to come and mess up whatever budget you have set up" YNAB is a program for proactive budgeting.
